Dear Father,
I’m going to surprise you very much—I’m engaged to be married to Helen Clinton. We arranged it last night. I am feeling so happy I 10 know what am doing. I do hope you will approve of the step I am taking. As you are aware, I am now making a fair income with every 11 of advancement, and I am sure I shall be ever so much happier married than I am at present.
I have known Helen for about four years. She is the best and dearest girl in the world, very sensible, a good housekeeper, and universally popular. I want you very much to see more of her, and get to like her more and more. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Your affectionate son,
Jim Brown
